LAFF 08: Baghead

For those unfamiliar with the emerging "mumblecore" movement, it's a catch-all moniker for a collection of independent films mostly shot on the cheap and featuring more authentic portraits of artsy twentysomethings. Thus far there are only a handful of noteworthy entries in the emerging subgenre, but the reason you have likely heard little or nothing about them is because they're generally low-budget comedies or dramas, and therefore don't stand out conspicuously among the ranks of other independent fare. Until now, that is: Baghead, the latest film by The Puffy Chair auteurs Jay and Mark Duplass, is at once a terrifically smart and scary piece of entertainment, an embodiment of the mumblecore aesthetic, and a sly commentary on the challenges aspiring and independent filmmakers face in finding an audience for their work.
